Dhauladhar Range Traverse

Dhaualadhar are quite apart from any other mountain range in the Himalaya being the outer most part of Himalaya next to the plains in Himachal & Punjab. The starting point of the trek is the popular hill station of Mcleodganj established during British regime in India. It rises from the Indian plains to the north in Kangra. There are many glacial lakes and high passes in the Dhauladhar and it is a haven for trekkers. This trek takes you across caves, famous lakes and passes of enriching beauty.

Regional Description

Mcleod Ganj is the residence of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and home to a large Tibetan population, including many monks and nuns. The Tibetan government-in-exile is based just downhill at Gangchen Kyishong. McLeod attracts thousands of international visitors each year to volunteer with the Tibetan community, take courses in Buddhism, meditation or yoga, trek in the Dhauladhar mountains, shop for Tibetan crafts, or just hang out spiritual/alternative vibe and the many good cafes and restaurants dishing up Indo-Italo-Israeli-Tibetan food.With an interesting mix of travelers, volunteers, maroon-robed monks and nuns, the international dharma crowd and an increasing flow of Indian tourists, you’re never far from an interesting conversation here.

Day 1
Arrival at Gaggal Airport/ Pathankot Railway Station & Transfer to Snow Monk Camp
- ArriveSalli Base Camp (1850M).
- Check into camp site.
- Pine Cones collection activity – they look great after a touch of varnish as a souvenir for home
- Post lunch – walk to Salli Village and River Khauli. Tea at a local villagers house
- Visit to Usha’s house – she makes lovely handicrafts from waste pine needles worth buying as a souvenir
- Experience “PAN CHAKKI” – grinding of wheat powered by gushing stream water on stones slabs like villagers used to before electricity was installed. Great Eco model worth visiting only available in the Himalaya
- Return back to the camp for evening tea
- Soup with Karoake music

- Night Trek with a torch

Day 2
Trek to Chagrotu (2800m) 10 Kms/5 Hrs via Salli Village
- Post breakfast we trek along with the Khauli River crossing the Salli village towards Daled camp site
- The trail crosses through dense forest crossing Chandraila temple leading to the meadows of Chagrotu
- Arrive at Chagrotu and organize the camp for overnight stay
- Evening to explore the surrounding area. Dinner & Overnight

Day 3
Climb Over Baleni Pass (3730 Mts)
- Trail climbs steeply up towards the Baleni Pass
- Cross over the pass and we camp besides one the seven lakes
- Evening to explore the area around

Lam Dal is approachable from Indrahar Pass, Minkiani Pass and Gaj Pass. In this mountain range, there are twenty-two lakes in total. Dhauladhar Range deserves a special mention for its high-elevated glacial lakes having mythological backgrounds and considered consecrated among the local inhabitants.

Lam Dal is among those sacred glacial lakes here. The trek to Lam Dal Lake begins from the captivating region of Bharmour. There is around 6 kilometers of trek for acclimatization in the beginning. Trekkers then have to reach Barie through train and then there is a 10 kilometer trek to Drakund and then around 12 kilometers of trek to Lam Dal next day.
Day 4
Descend From Lamdal to Daled and Climb to Kareri Lake (10kms/4hrs)
- After breakfast, we walk down to the Daled
- Evening to explore the area around

Day 5
Rest Day / Option to Climb to Minkhiani Pass
- Trail goes through mixed forests of oak, rhododendron and pine. The trail climbs steeply up crossing the ridge and descending down to Kareri Lake
- Post lunch to explore the lake area
- Night stay in tents at bank of Kareri Lake.
- Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

Day 6
Kareri Lake - Bagga (2500 Mts/8200 Ft) 10 Kms/ 5 Hrs
- After a short ascent from the lake is a steep descent through the forest to Bagga.
- Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

Day 7
Bagga - Rawa Village - Bahl Village. (2130 Mts/6987 Ft) 15 Km/6 Hrs
- The trial goes downhill through the forest. Rawa village is situated on the bank of a small river. Thereon, It is a steep ascent through the forest to Bahl Village.
- Dinner and overnight stay in a village.

Day 8
Bahl to Triund (2870m) 12 Kms 4/5 Hours Walk
- Steep ascent through mixed forest of oak, of Dhauladhar on one side and Kangra valley on the other. rhododendron and cedar trees takes us to Triund, an alpine meadow situated on top of a ridge. From Triund we have close superb views of peaks

Day 9
Triund – Laka Got (3200m) 6 Kms
- After breakfast we start our ascent to Laka Got. It is an hour walk to Khabrotu from where we do a side acclimatization walk to KunalPathri, a small temple situated on top of a ridge. Walk back to Khabrotu to continue or walk to Laka got. Our camping site at Laka got is situated at the snout of a small glacier which stays full of snow till end of May.

Day 10
Laka Got – Lahes Cave – Laka Got
- This day we walk on Laka glacier and go towards InderharaPass. The more adventurous trekkers can try to attempt the pass which is really a difficult climb and needs extra physical strength and stamina. Back to Laka got for overnight stay in the camp.

Laka Got - Bhagsu Nag - Mcleodganj 12 Kms/ Visit Dalai Lama Temple
- After breakfast at camp we start our downhill walk to Bhagsu Nag.
- Reach Mcleodganj by lunch time
- Check into the Hotel
- Visit H.H. Dalai Lama Temple (also known as Namgyal Temple) including the official home of his Holiness Tsuglagkhang, Tibetian Museum
- Overnight at Hotel

Explore the Spiritual Adventures/ Cultures of Kangra Valley
- After breakfast, Visit Norbulingka Institute.
- NORBULINGKA INSTITUTE is dedicated to handing down tradition and restoring standards by providing training, education and employment for Tibetans. It supports an environment in which Tibetan community and family values can flourish. It reconciles the traditional creatively and respectfully with the modern, and seeks to create an international awareness of Tibetan values and their expression in art and literature. The institute houses gardens, museum, temple, arts & crafts, sculptures & galleries.
- Visit the Masrur 8th Century old monolithic temples cut out of one single sandstone rock decorated with sculpultural ornamentation
- Drive to visit Brijeshwari temple & Kangra Fort. Tae an audio guide at the entrance for a memorable walk up the fort
- Drive back to hotel.

- MASRUR ROCK TEMPLE: 40 kms south of Dharamsala in Kangra valley are one of the only such type of Temple in the Himalayas. This 7th of 8th Century old monolithic temples have been cut out of one single sandstone rock and are decorated with sculpultural ornamentation and seem to have been built in the same manner as the great temples of Kailash at Ellora in Maharashatra.
- KANGRA FORT: The Kangra Fort was built by the royal Rajput family of Kangra State (the Katoch dynasty), which traces its origins to the ancient Trigarta Kingdom, mentioned in the Mahabharata epic. It is the largest fort in the Himalayas and probably the oldest dated fort in India. The fort of Kangra resisted Akbar’s siege in 1615. However, Akbar’s son Jahangir successfully subdued the fort in 1620. Kangra was at the time ruled by Raja Hari Chand Katoch of Kangra (also known as Raja Hari Chand Mughal Emperor Jahangir with the help of Suraj Mal garrisoned with his troops.
